El cantante británico Sam Smith se asumió como una persona de género no binario, es decir, que no se identifica con el género masculino ni con el femenino. A través de sus redes sociales, el también compositor pidió hoy que cuando se refieran a su persona, lo hagan con los pronombres en inglés “they y them”, que son neutros y no distinguen de él o ella. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM ❤ after a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out. I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but fuck it! I understand there will be many mistakes and mis gendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you. P.s. I am at no stage just yet to eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non binary but I can’t wait for the day that I am. So for now I just want to be VISIBLE and open. He decidido cambiar mi pronombre a They/Them, luego de una vida entera de estar en guerra con mi género, he decidido aceptarme por lo que soy, por dentro y por fuera”, escribió. El intérprete de éxitos como Dancing with a stranger aseguró sentirse emocionado y privilegiado por estar rodeado de personas que lo apoyan en su decisión. No obstante, confesó sentirse nervioso de hacer este anuncio, porque suele tener muy presente lo que opinan los demás. Entiendo que habrá muchos errores y malentendidos, pero solo les pido que por favor, por favor lo intenten. Espero que puedan verme como yo me veo hoy. Gracias”, escribió y agregó que, por el momento, quiere ser visible y abierto sobre este tema. “Si tienen dudas y se están preguntando qué es lo que todo esto significa, haré mi mejor intento por explicárselos”, aseguró. En otro tuit, Smith colocó las cuentas de varios activistas y líderes de la comunidad trans y no binaria que lo ayudaron a entender con más claridad este asunto, con el propósito de que sus seguidores visiten sus respectivas redes y se eduquen sobre el tema. “Los amo a todos. Estoy muy asustado, pero me siento muy libre en este momento. Sean amables”, finalizó.
